Blur, Pixelate or Redact an Image
Hide a face, a number plate, an address or a line of text in a photo. Paint over it with a brush or select a rectangle, choose blur, pixelate or a solid block, and save a new PNG, JPEG or BMP.
Processed locally — your image stays on your device.
Blur, pixelate or redact?
Blur and pixelate make an area hard to recognise at a glance, which suits faces in a crowd or a background you want to soften. They do not always destroy the information: blurred or pixelated text, especially short text such as a number with light settings, can sometimes be read or reconstructed.
Redact covers the area with a solid colour and keeps none of the original pixels. Use it for anything that must stay private, such as account numbers, addresses or signatures. The brush edge is hard in Redact so nothing shows through at the edge.
The saved file contains only the final picture. There are no layers or hidden copies of what you covered.
Formats and size
The tool opens PNG, JPEG and BMP images, and HEIC photos in Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, and saves as PNG, JPEG or BMP. PNG keeps transparency; JPEG and BMP fill transparent areas with the background colour you choose. Each JPEG save loses a little detail, so for repeated editing PNG is the better choice.
Pictures up to 4096 × 4096 pixels are edited at full size, which includes ordinary 12-megapixel phone photos. A larger picture can be edited as a reduced copy at the largest size that fits; the tool tells you the size before it starts.
