A percentage grade gets the highest letter whose lowest percentage it reaches. Anything lower is an F.
Many high schools give harder courses extra points. Mark each course's type in step 1.
Points for every letter in each kind of course. Regular courses use the scale in step 3. The table starts from the extra-points values; change any number to match your school.
To get a cumulative GPA, add the GPA and credits you already have.
Each grade is worth a number of points: on the common 4.0 scale, A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0. Multiply each course's points by its credits to get its quality points. Add up the quality points, then divide by the total credits.
For example, an A in a 1-credit course (4 quality points) and a B in a 0.5-credit course (1.5 quality points) give 5.5 ÷ 1.5 = 3.67.
An unweighted GPA counts every course on the same scale. A weighted GPA gives harder courses, such as Honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment, extra points. One school might make an A worth 4.5 in Honors and 5.0 in AP; another might use 5.0 and 6.0. Colleges often look at both and may recalculate GPAs their own way.
Step 4 offers both common ways schools weight: the same extra points on every passing grade of a course type, or a separate scale where you set the points for every letter in each kind of course. You can also name one course type of your own.
Some schools count only the letter, so a B+ and a B− are both worth 3.0. Others add or take away about 0.3: B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7. Turn on plus and minus grades in step 3 and set the value your school uses. If plus and minus grades are off, a typed B+ counts as a B.
