How the counts work
- Words are separated by spaces and line breaks, as in a word processor. "Well-known", "don't" and "3.5" are one word each; a dash or symbol on its own is not a word. Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other languages written without spaces are split into words by your browser's built-in word rules.
- Characters are counted the way you see them: an emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts as one, even when it is stored as several code points. Spaces and line breaks count as characters; characters without spaces leaves them out.
- Sentences end at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a new sentence, using your browser's sentence rules. An abbreviation such as "Mr." can occasionally start a new sentence.
- Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
- Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for non-fiction found by a large 2019 review of studies. Speaking time assumes 140 words a minute, a comfortable presentation pace.
Some websites count differently. X (Twitter), for example, counts each emoji and some languages' characters as two and every link as 23. Check the site's own counter before posting text that is right at its limit.
Counting part of your text
Select some of the text in the box and its words and characters are shown under the totals, which is useful for checking one paragraph or a single answer in a longer document.
